St. Wolfgang

St. Wolfgang is a spectacular Austrian town located on the shores of Lake Wolfgang and at the foot of the Schafberg Mountain in the Salzkammergut area. In the 10th century, as the legend tells it, St. Wolfgang, Bishop of Regensburg, hurled an ax and planned to create a church along the then-Abersee bay. The church housing Michael Pacher’s gothic altarpiece has since been a place of pilgrimage for many over the years. The town is also famous for its Weisses Roessl, or White Horse Inn, which is the setting for the famous musical comedy of the same name.

Salzkammergut

The Salzkammergut World Heritage Site, an expansive area that covers 52 municipalities, is basically the Austrian Lake District. Salzkammergut is composed of numerous lakes and mountains, stretching from Salzburg to the Dachstein Mountains, making it a popular tourist destination for adventure travelers looking to climb, cycle, and swim through this magnificent area. The most popular municipalities here are Hallstatt and St. Gilgen, where Mozart’s mother was born.

Lake Wolfgang

Also known as Wolfgangsee, this beautiful lake in the Salzkammergut area of Austria is a popular destination for resorts. Lake Wolfgang was the setting for the legend of its namesake Bishop of Regensburg, Saint Wolfgang, who in the 10th century founded a church here. He chose the destination by tossing an ax and seeing where it landed, according to legend. The towns and villages of St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, Strobl, Abersee, and Ried surround the lake area.
