Itinerary

Cathedral of Como (Duomo)

After your 1-hour coach journey from Milan, start your tour of Como visiting the historic center, and enjoy some free time to get to know the town and shop in the many local boutiques.

About Como Cathedral

Como’s primary site of worship is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, more commonly referred to as Como Cathedral.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the focus of the cathedral, which was constructed between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries. It is regarded as one of the most significant religious structures in northern Italy.

Many Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque components may be found in the cathedral despite its Gothic appearance.

Como: 3-hour private walking tour

For ten years following the construction of Milan Cathedral, Lorenzo Degli Spazzi from Laino was in charge of the construction of this cathedral. A previous Romanesque church was demolished on the current location of the Como Cathedral in order to make place for the new construction.

In the second half of the 15th century, the cathedral’s majestic facade was completed. Como residents Pliny Elder and Pliny Younger are depicted in a rose window and a passageway between the two statues.

From 36 to 56 meters broad and 75 meters high, the cathedral has a length of 87 meters and a width of 36 to 56 meters. With three naves, a Renaissance transept, and a large dome, it has the Latin Cross floor plan. Nearby buildings, including the Broletto and civic tower, are perfectly aligned with the facade.

There are a few Renaissance elements in the sculptures on the exterior of the building. Adam and Eve are shown in two tondos at the top of the doorway (that is, humanity).

About Lake Como

Known also as Lario, Lake Como is Italy’s third-largest lake by volume (after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore). Lake Como is one of Europe’s deepest lakes, with a maximum depth of roughly 410 meters (448 yards).

Glaciers and the ancient river Adda have combined to create its distinctive shape, which looks like an upside-down Y. Because of these two southern divisions, the world-famous Bellagio can be found.

The picturesque towns and villages that dot the Lake Como shoreline stretch all the way around the lake. Bellagio, Varenna, and the city that bears the lake’s name, Como, are the most popular destinations.

About Bellagio

Bellagio is a beautiful town on the shores of Lake Como in Lombardy that has a lot of charm. Most travelers to Lake Como will come across it at some point, as it is a popular ferry stop.

Day tour from Milan: Lake Como & Bellagio with Cruise in a Small-group tour

In the middle of Lake Como, the town is referred to as the ‘pearl of the Lake Como’, both because of its beauty and because of its position between the two branches of the lake, which divides the lake into two distinct sections.

Two homes and gardens in the town of Bellagio are also notable: the Villa Serbelloni (south of the center) and the Villa Melzi (north of the center) (to the north). A villa was built here by Pliny the Younger (61–112 AD) in order to take advantage of the area’s natural beauty.

These two gardens are worth a visit, but the most notable is Villa Serbelloni’s huge and beautifully maintained gardens, which occupy a considerable area above the town and include a wide variety of attractions such as plant specimens, miniature caves, and water features. There are only a limited number of tickets available from the Bellagio Tourist Office for guided tours.

The famous Bellagio Resort in Las Vegas, US, was named after this town.

Funicolare Como-Brunate

Only during winter time (from November to March)

Como to Brunate can be reached via a funicular. Hundreds of people visit the alpine community every day thanks to this train.

Due to Como’s strategic location between Italy and northern Europe, it has always played a significant part in its history.

The Grandeur Of Como: Villa Olmo and Brunate Funicular

Since the 19th century, tourism has been increasingly significant in this region, and more and more people are looking for a place to rest.

Steamboats were the first mode of transportation for visitors to the lake. With the building of the St Gottardo railway tunnel, the area’s popularity soared later.

When the Como-Brunate funicular opened in 1894, it was about 100 years old. As early as 1911, the traction system was powered by electricity rather than steam.

Azienda Trasporti Milanesi now operates the railway after a series of ownership and technical changes.

The railway line is clearly visible from the lakeshore. If you can get there at nightfall, you’ll see it in all its glory.
