Itinerary

Day 1: Reykjavik – Seljalandsfoss – Skogafoss – Vik – Vatnajokull National Park – Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Travel on a journey to explore glacier volcanoes, black sand beaches, spectacular waterfalls, and frozen lagoons across Iceland’s beautiful south coast. We will ride along the coast via Route 1, the main road that wraps around Iceland, from Reykjavik. We’ll pass through the Hellisheidi Power Station and the nearby volcano of Mt. Hengill, an active volcano that powers the station as well as the rest of Iceland.

We’ll travel past Hveragerdi, popular for its many greenhouses, down to the southern lowlands, and Selfoss, host of the lovely Summer Festival at Selfoss, then head east to the farmlands of the Floi region. We’ll take a short break at the village of Hvolsvollur by crossing Iceland’s longest river, Thjorsa.

2-Day Private Iceland South Coast and Glacier Lagoon TourWe’ll discover one of the most popular and picturesque waterfalls in Iceland from here: the Seljalandsfoss, which is 60 meters high. This magnificent waterfall, descending from ancient sea cliffs into a shallow lake, allows you to step back and take spectacular pictures of the falls bisecting the surrounding landscape, including the famed volcano of Eyjafjallajokull Glacier to the south.

We’ll discover another amazing waterfall as we begin our journey: Skogafoss. Skogafoss considered one of the most beautiful in the world, gracefully cascades 60 meters into a black stream of pebbles. Next, we will head east past the glacier of Myrdalsjokull and the formidable volcano of Mt. Katla, arriving at the coastal village of Vik.

Here we come across Iceland’s famous black sand beach, Reynisdrangar, where we can walk along the coast to see the unusual rock formations. We’ll pass into the enormous Eldgjarhraun lava field, covering an area of 700 square kilometers, all the way east. The lava field formed after the Eyjafjallajokull eruption.

As we fly across the Skeidararsandur plains, passing by the black volcanic sands between the Skeidararjokull glacier and the sea, more breathtaking landscapes await us. We will cross the Skeidara River and reach Skaftafell, a nature reserve within the National Park of Vatnajokull, lined with glaciers that have for ages formed this area.

Then we will arrive at the glacier lagoon of Jokulsarlon, an enchanting winter wonderland of icebergs that have broken off from the glaciers around them.

We will return to our nearby accommodation after you have enjoyed the dramatic scenery where we will enjoy dinner (own cost) and relax for the rest of the evening.

Day 2: Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon – Dyrholaey Island – Reykjavik

We’ll have some more free time to explore the lagoon and see seals basking along the black sand shores after breakfast.

We will then launch our journey back to Reykjavik. We’ll visit the southernmost tip of Iceland along the way, with an excursion to Dryholaey, a small peninsula that rises 120 meters from the sea. For a while, we will be able to explore here and spot the splendid variety of seabirds that live here.

On our return trip to Reykjavik, we’ll make one last stop at Reynisfjara and then drop you off at your hotel in the area.
