Sainte Chapelle and Conciergerie Ticket / Priority Access
Sainte Chapelle + Conciergerie
When you’ve been overwhelmed by modern Paris with its boutiques, bicycles and baguettes, step back in time at two of its most interesting and historic landmarks in the medieval Palais de la Cité–once the Kings of France residence. Sainte Chappelle was home to Christ’s Crown of Thorns with its fascinating stained glass windows, while the Conciergerie was home, or rather Marie-Antoinette’s prison! This ticket gives you access to both priorities.
See two amazing sights from the past of France-a 13th-century church with wonderful stained glass windows, and a medieval royal palace once home to French royalty. This ticket enables you to skip the lines at both locations. NOTE: Security controls must be passed by all tourists.
This intimate chapel and UNESCO World Heritage Site was consecrated on April 26, 1248, proudly standing on the Ile de la Cite. It was commissioned by King Louis IX, who wished to house his collection of religious relics somewhere nice, including the Crown of Thorns of Christ.
This Gothic chapel is renowned for its collection of 15 beautiful stained glass windows depicting 1,113 Old and New Testament scenes–as well as a panel showing the relocation of the Relics to Paris, featuring the patron saint of the church, King Louis. The light that streams through those windows on a sunny day makes you forgive every drop of rain that has ever fallen on Paris.
The Conciergerie
At the end of the 14th century, the Kings of France left this ancient royal palace (settling in the Louvre and Vincennes kept more attraction), at which point it became a prison and a revolutionary tribunal. It was one of the main detention centers throughout the French Revolution (when it was referred to as “the guillotine’s antechamber”).
In the case of its most famous resident, former Queen Marie Antoinette, that statement was certainly true. As you walk around the Salle des Gardes and the enormous Salle des Gens d’armes (Soldiers’ Hall), consider how she must have felt imprisoned in this place. Her memorial chapel was built in the refurbishment at the site of her cell.
Explore the ancient court of the French Revolution on your tour to the Conciergerie. Admire the prisoners’ cells and the tombs of the French Revolution heroes in this lovely location. Learn more about the Conciergerie’s transition from the royal residence to the French monarch’s justice and the revolutionary court throughout its history. See the cell where Marie Antoinette, along with other renowned inmates of the time, was imprisoned.
The two most captivating Gothic monuments ever erected in Paris are Notre Dame Cathedral and the Sainte Chapelle. They transport us to the Middle Ages, when the colored lights represented God’s word resonating through stained-glass windows, guiding men to salvation.
