The monument, which stands at 67.5 meters tall, crosses two of Buenos Aires’ most prominent streets, Calles 9 de Julio and Corrientes. The monument was created in 1936 to mark the 400th anniversary of Buenos Aires and was designed by Alberto Prebisch out of Cordoba white stone.

The city’s inception in 1536, its second establishment in 1580, the inauguration celebration of the Argentinian flag in 1812, and the designation of Buenos Aires as the country’s capital in 1880 are all commemorated on each side of the landmark.

The Obelisco sits on the exact spot where the San Nicolas church formerly stood and where the first Argentine flag was flown in 1812. Demonstrations and gatherings were and still are held at this place. People go to the site for a variety of reasons, including political protests, religious gatherings, sporting events, and more.

During major celebrations and holidays, the government frequently decorates the monument. For La Noche de los Lápices, the monument was transformed into a pencil, into a Christmas tree for Christmas, and a large pink condom for World AIDS Day.

The Obelisco is a symbol of Buenos Aires and Argentina and one of the most photographed landmark.
