Belém Tower, together with Jerónimos Monastery is a part of UNESCO World Heritage site in Lisbon, Portugal.

Built in early 16th century, it was a symbol of Portugal’s exploration power and it was used as the main departure and arrival point of many worldwide sea quests at the time.

Today, this is the most recognizable landmark of Lisbon and Portugal in general and serve as a historic reminder of Portugal’s glorious past.

It is situated on the northern bank of the Tagus River and accessible from the western end of the Avenida de Brasília by a small bridge.

The five floors of the tower lead to a roof terrace. Each story is connected by a short, narrow spiral staircase, which can be a little daunting on the busiest days when you have to wait your turn to ascend and descend.

The Governor’s Hall, The Kings’ Hall, The Audience Hall, The Chapel, and The Roof Terrace are the floors, from bottom to top.

A curious rhinoceros-shaped gargoyle can be found on the western façade of the Tower of Belém. In reality, the first rhino to arrive in Portugal was from India in 1513.
