Swiss Alps

The Swiss Alpine region, generally referred to as the Swiss Alps, is a major natural feature of the country and, along with the Swiss Plateau and the Jura Mountains, is one of its three primary physiographical regions. There are two groups of mountains called the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps, which are together referred to as the Central Alps.

In the northern ranges, which run from the Bernese Alps to the Appenzell Alps, the country of Switzerland completely occupies all of these regions. However, in the southern ranges, which run from the Mont Blanc massif to the Bernina massif, other countries like France, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein share the land.

All of the Alpine mountain peaks of Switzerland, such as Dufourspitze (4,634 m), the Dom (4,545 m), the Liskamm (4,527 m), the Weisshorn (4,506 m) and the Matterhorn, are in the Swiss Alps (4,478 m). Also included in this list of Swiss mountains are the other summits in the second set of following major summits.

The major destinations for winter sports like skiing and other activities are located in Valais, Bernese Oberland, and Graubünden. There are some villages where cars are not permitted and the only way to reach these villages is by using public transport like Riederalp and Bettmeralp. Saas-Fee and Zermatt both have winter skiing destinations. The ski season typically starts in November and lasts to the end of April; however, the majority of ski resorts in Switzerland are likely to be open starting in December and running through April.
