Connecting the Ciutat Vella (Old City) to the Eixample district, Plaça de Catalunya is Barcelona’s largest central square. Some of the busiest thoroughfares in Barcelona converge in the plaza known as Catalunya.

There are five metro lines, a bus line, a car, a lot of black and yellow taxis and a lot of pedestrians on Las Ramblas. This, along with the numerous pigeons, creates a bustling gathering spot. Passeig de Gràcia (a prominent shopping route), Ronda de la Universitat, and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes all intersect at Plaça d’Espanya, making it a hub for the city. There is also the El Corte Inglés department store nearby.

The 5-hectare Plaça de Catalunya was dedicated by King Alfonso XIII in 1927. Before the construction of the walls that enclose Barcelona, this area was only open terrain. Designers included Pere Falques, Puig i Cadafalch, and Francesc de Paula Nebot. Famous sculptors like Clarà and Llimona are also represented.
