Kaimu Black Sand Beach is a relatively new black sand beach on the Big Island, Hawaii, located south of Pahoa in the Puna area. Kaimu Beach is one of the few beaches on the Big Island with such a fascinating history. It used to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the Big Island, but today it’s a young black sand beach that’s formed 50 feet above the previous one.
Although this is not a swimming or snorkeling beach, we believe it is a must-see for anyone interested in volcanoes.
Kaimu Black Sand Beach is one of the best spots to witness the Big Island’s never-ending cycle of devastation and rebirth, which gives it an almost magical aura. With your own eyes, you can witness the destruction and creation.
How often do you get to walk on a beach with someone younger than you? (Obviously, this point only applies to persons born before 1990.)
A visit to Kaimu Beach allows you to witness the Kilauea volcano’s magnificent and deadly force. The old Kaimu beach beachfront was fairly near to the houses where cars can now be parked. The harbor has now been totally filled by lava, and access to the beach requires a 300-meter trek through this new terrain.
Kaimu Black Sand Beach is readily integrated into any Puna vacation plan. A visit to the lava flow, a visit to the even newer Pohoiki beach, or a very gorgeous road journey between Kapoha and Kalapana can all be combined.
