Join us on a one-day journey through the city of Dresden, once known as the Florence of the Elbe!
We’ll travel to the northern border of the Czech Republic and arrive in the center of Dresden. Upon arrival, we’ll visit the world-renowned Zwinger gallery and its collection of masterworks. See the Sistine Madonna by Raphael as well as paintings by Titian, Canaletto, and Lucas Cranach the Elder. Pass through the chateau complex, which has been completely renovated, and visits the rebuilt Frauenkirche, once again a dominant feature of the city.
After your guided tour, enjoy free time for lunch or shopping.
Then we’ll return to Prague.
Itinerary
Pass via the Czech Republic’s northern border with Germany aboard an air-conditioned coach out of Prague. Learn about Dresden’s rich history from your guide as you journey through the city. The rococo and baroque splendor of Dresden’s historic core has earned the city the nickname “Florence of the Elbe.” Dresden is the state capital of Germany’s state of Saxony.
Head to the magnificent Zwinger Palace, a former royal mansion now housing a world-renowned art collection, when you arrive late in the morning. The Sistine Madonna by Raphael works by Titian and Canaletto, and paintings by 17th-century Dutch and Flemish masters such as Rembrandt and Rubens may all be found in the Old Masters Gallery.
Visit the Frauenkirche (Frauenkirche), Europe’s largest dome-topped church, as you make your way around the Dresden Castle complex.
Learn how the baroque masterpiece was reconstructed after it was destroyed by the Nazis during World War II. You’ll be able to eat lunch on your own after the trip (own expense). The pedestrianized neighborhood of Weisse Gasse has a number of restaurants and pubs where you may stop for a bite to eat before spending more time on your own sightseeing or shopping.
Alternatively, meander down the Elbe to see the Blue Wonder, a steel bridge that was deemed a miracle of engineering upon its completion in 1893; or see the majestic Semper Opera House, where Richard Wagner premieres were staged in the 1800s. In the end, you’ll return to Prague, where you began your journey.
