Located in Paris, France, the Galeries Lafayette department store network is the most prestigious department store located in Europe. Although it has a variety of locations in France and other countries, its main store is located on Boulevard Haussmann in the 9th arrondissement of Paris.

However, it also works in other countries. By the end of 2019, Galeries Lafayette had accumulated more than five billion euros in revenue. Since the year 1960, it has been a member of the International Association of Department Stores and is a subsidiary of the corporation Groupe Galeries Lafayette.

History

In 1894, Théophile Bader and his cousin Alphonse Kahn founded a fashion business in a modest haberdasher’s shop in Paris. The establishment was located at the intersection of rue La Fayette and the Chaussée d’Antin.8 hours Paris Tour with Montmartre, Le Marais, Cruise & Galeries Lafayette

The complete building at 1 rue La Fayette was purchased by their company in the year 1896. In 1905, they acquired the buildings located at 38, 40, and 42 boulevard Haussmann, as well as 15 route de la Chaussée d’Antin. In 1912, Bader commissioned the architect Georges Chedanne and his pupil Ferdinand Chanut to create the store that was located at the Haussmann location. The store included a glass and steel dome as well as staircases that were designed in the Art Nouveau style.

The Maîtrise workshop of the Galeries Lafayette was under the direction of Maurice Dufrêne beginning in 1921. Following in the footsteps of the Primavera of the Printemps store, which was established in 1912 by René Guilleré, the Pomone of Le Bon Marché, which was founded by Paul Follot, and the Studium of the Grands Magasins du Louvre, this studio for ornamental art and furniture was established.

FIB (Financière Immobilière Bordelaise), a firm owned by Michel Ohayon, purchased twenty-two stores in France that were converted into franchises and sold to them in 2018. These stores were located in small and medium-sized neighbourhoods. Galeries Lafayette made the choice to transform the stores into franchises on the grounds that they desired to concentrate on expanding their business both worldwide and online.

There were eleven stores that were franchised in the year 2021, seven of which were sold to the Société des Grands Magasins, and the remaining three were sold to FIB, which had previously acquired twenty-two locations in 2018. Philippe Sempéré and Nicolas Chambon, who also run the Béziers store, were awarded the eleventh store in Avignon. They are also the owners of the ninth store.

Around fifty locations, including subsidiarized stores, have been opened by Galeries Lafayette in France alone as of the year 2022. Additionally, twelve outlet stores have been opened.

The store offers a diverse selection of brands to suit all budgets, ranging from ready-to-wear to haute couture. The store’s architecture is art nouveau, with a magnificent dome and a panoramic view of Paris that has made it a tourist attraction in the French capital. In Paris, Galeries Lafayette hosts a popular weekly fashion show for visitors.

From the sixth story, you will need to walk the stairs in order to reach the summit of the building. The steps are only a short flight, yet they are immediately worth climbing. When you finally make it outdoors, you will be treated to a complimentary panorama of the city that encompasses 180 degrees and includes a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower. In addition, because the barrier that is located on the edge of the building is see-through, the images that you take of the view will not include a cumbersome fence.

At the very top, there are two restaurants where you may have a meal and a drink while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
