We then proceed to Wat Benchamabophit-the temple of marble! It is one of the most new and striking temples to be found in Bangkok. In addition to the huge reclining figure, Wat Pho is the oldest temple in Bangkok, dating back to the 17th century, and houses more than 1,000 Buddha images.

Wat Traimit is famous because it houses the largest giant golden Buddha statue in the world, 10 feet high and weighing 5 1⁄2 tons, and is made of 18 karats of pure gold, valued at $250 million. This Buddha statue has a very story, it survived the invasion of Burmese, it was kept locked in Paris plaster for much of the century, then eventually found its way from Ayutthaya to Bangkok. It is said to have been relocated to Bangkok in 1801, when King Rama 1 ordered all the statues depicting Lord Buddha.

Tourists often know Wat Benchamabophit as The Marble Temple. There is a European influence not only in the Italian marble used here but also in the stained glass windows found here. Thge singhas(lions) defending bot entrance. The interiors are decorated with lacquer and gold crossbeams and in shallow niches throughout the country, in the walls of paintings of important stupas. Around the assembly hall the cloister houses 52 Buddha images.

The Buddha’s principal statute in this temple is a clone of Phra Buddha Chinarat residing in northern Thailand’s Phitsanulok. Below the statue is buried the ashes of King Chulalongkorn.

52 Buddha statues each displaying different mudras (signs), collected for his king by Prince Damrong Rajanubhab, are in the gallery surrounding the ordination hall.

In addition to the huge reclining figure, which is over 150 feet (46 m) in length and 49 feet (15 m) high, Wat Pho houses more than 1,000 Buddha images, the oldest temple in Bangkok, dating from the 17th century.

The birthplace of traditional thai massage is Wat Pho. Even before the establishment of the temple, the site was a center of traditional Thai medicine education, and statues were made that displayed yoga positions. Wat Pho is Bangkok’s largest and oldest wat and is home to more than 1,000 images of Buddha, more than any other temple in the world.
