The USS Arizona Memorial is one of several sites in Hawaii that are part of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. It marks the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors and marines killed on USS Arizona during the 7 December 1941 Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and commemorates the events of that day. The assault on Pearl Harbor and Oahu Island led to the direct involvement of the United States in World War II.
More than two million people visited the museum, established in 1962, each year. Accessible only by ships, it straddles the battleship’s sunken hull without reaching it. The associated USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center, which opened in 1980 and is operated by the National Park Service, offers historical information about the attack, shuttle boats to and from the memorial, and general visitor services. On 5 May 1989, the sunken remains of the battleship were declared a National Historic Landmark.
