Arrabida Day Trip from Lisbon with Wine Tasting
Lisbon – Albufeira Lagoon – Espichel Cape – Sesimbra – Arrabida Natural Park – Palmela – Lisbon
Cross the Tagus River over the 25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) to the south side, and discover all of the natural wonders of this region. The Arrabida Mountain is a green wonder opening onto the Atlantic. On the way to this beautiful place, we’ll pass by several important places such as the statue of Cristo Rei.
Exiting the surrounding suburbs of Lisbon, we’ll eventually arrive at the Albufeira Lagoon (Lagoa de Albufeira), one of the best bird watching spots in Portugal. After stopping here, we’ll head towards the Espichel Cape, a very special place known for its singular beauty, and as a pilgrimage site since the 15th century, when the Virgin Mary made an appearance here.
After visiting this area we’ll go to the fishing village of Sesimbra with its impressive 12th century castle overlooking the Bay of Sesimbra. Here you can try some local seafood dishes such as Mariscada de Sesimbra or Caldeirada (own expense). Sesimbra is also well known for Marlin fishing.
Nest stop: Arrabida Nature Park! We’ll pass by beautiful forest areas and vineyards where some of the best muscat wines in the world are produced, and see astonishing views over the Atlantic Ocean. There’s still time to stop and see the view from different vantage points, as well as the Arrabida Convent, dating from the 13th century.
After passing through Setubal we’ll stop at the historic village of Palmela with its castle overlooking the estuary of the Sado Rivar and the Tagus River – a 260 degree panorama on the Main Tower. Going back to Lisbon through Palmela’s medieval labyrinth of roads is also a unique experience! To put the finishing touch on a splendid day, we’ll sample a traditional pastry – Torta de Azeitao – and a local Muscat wine (Moscatel de Setubal).
