The Uffizi Gallery occupies entirely the first and second floors of the large building designed by Giorgio Vasari between 1560 and 1580. It is known throughout the world for its excellent collections of ancient sculptures and paintings (from the Middle Ages to the Modern Period).
There are some absolute masterpieces in the collections of paintings from the 14th and Renaissance periods: Giotto, Simone Martini, Piero della Francesca, Beato Angelico, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Mantegna, Correggio, Leonardo, Raffaello, Michelangelo and Caravaggio, as well as many valuable works by European painters (mainly German, Netherlands and Flemish).
The museum is set up as a long labyrinth of chambers with incredible works of art displayed in roughly chronological order along a U-shaped Renaissance edifice that was never designed to be a museum.
Cosimo de’ Medici had commissioned Giorgio Vasari, his favorite architect, to design a grandiose structure next to the Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of power, to house the magistrates, the Florentine Guilds’ seats, a vast theatre, and judicial offices (hence the name “Uffizi,” which means “offices” in Italian).
The Uffizi Gallery, which attracts over a million tourists each year, is a must-see for everyone visiting Florence and Tuscany. The Uffizi, together with the Vatican Museums in Rome, are the top two most visited museums in Italy.
It is highly recommended to get skip the line tickets for this museum as lines can be enormously long.
