The Presidential Palace, or Grassalkovich Palace as it is more well known, was constructed in 1760 as Count Anton Grassalkovi’s summer house. The palace quickly became the hub of social activity, drawing such notables as Empress Maria Theresa.

After undergoing extensive renovations in 1996, the palace once again served as the official residence of the President of Slovakia. Only during scheduled events is it accessible to the general public. A globe-shaped fountain stands in front of the structure to represent liberty. Similar to the famous Queen’s Guard in London, the Honour Guard of the President now protects the presidential residence.

A massive French-style garden unfolds behind the building. A fountain titled “Youth” stands next to a replica of a statue of Empress Maria Theresa. The garden is a terrific spot for summer sports, hikes, and relaxation, and it is open to the public during the opening hours. Many outdoor activities take place here.

Many well-known politicians have planted trees in this garden to show their support for and collaboration with Slovakia.

The Presidential Palace and Garden are conveniently placed close to the heart of the city. Walk straight ahead after exiting the city through Michael’s gate. The distance to the palace is less than half a km. From the Obchodná street, you can head “up” to the Potová street, cross the Hodovo námestie square via the underpass, and arrive at your destination.
