Quick facts

Sensoji is a Buddhist temple in Asakusa, also known as the Asakusa Kannon Temple. It’s one of the most colorful and famous temples in Tokyo.

The legend says two brothers fished out of the Sumida River a statue of Kannon, the goddess of compassion, in the year 628, and although they placed the statue back in the river, it always returned to them. Sensoji was therefore built nearby i honor of the goddess of Kannon. The temple was completed in 645, making it the oldest temple in Tokyo.
