- Admire the delicately arched ceiling in this beautiful Gothic church
- Wander the streets and visit the ramparts of the medieval village below the Abbey
- Visit this once off-limits inner courtyard, built for the monks’ private use when they separated themselves from the outside world
Take this trip to have a better understanding of the island of Mont-Saint-Michel (a UNESCO Heritage). Fortifications have been on the island since antiquity, and it has served as the monastery’s headquarters since the 8th century AD.
During the fifth to eighth centuries, Mont Saint-Michel belonged to the province of Neustria, and it remained unconquered during the Hundred Years’ War, after which King Louis XI converted it into a prison for the royal family of France.
According to legend, the archangel Michael appeared to Aubert of Avranches, the bishop of Avranches, in 708 and commanded him to erect a church on the rocky island. The church was completed in 709.
