We’ll head west from Dublin through the farmland and peat bogs of the counties of Kildare and Offaly.
Locke’s Distillery, reputedly the world’s oldest legal distillery, is our first stop. Sample the local whiskey and discover Ireland’s true spirit!
The mighty Shannon River and the early Christian site of Clonmacnoise, with its array of churches, stone crosses and towers, will be reached further west.
We’ll make our way to Galway, our base for the next two nights, after an afternoon stop at a traditional pub in one of the attractive little villages. There’s no shortage of fine pubs and restaurants in this vibrant student area.
Sitting on the edge of Connemara, Galway is the place we are going to explore today. We can fly inland to the village of Cong, on the shores of Lough Corrib, via the Maam Valley. You’ll have plenty of time there to visit Cong Abbey or the Museum of Quiet Man.
Continuing through the heart of Connemara, we will arrive at Kylemore Abbey’s beautiful house and grounds. You can see Connemara National Park, Clifden, Sky Road and the Twelve Bens of Connemara all the way around the circuit.
It is just a short drive from Galway along the coast to Burren, one of the great natural wonders of Ireland. This is a land of pavements of limestone, barren hillsides, unusual flora, ancient stone temples and early Christian settlements. We will spend most of the morning exploring this unique area, stopping for lunch in one of the lovely local villages.
We will explore the breathtaking Moher Cliffs after lunch, falling nearly 700 feet straight down into the Atlantic. You can walk the clifftop trails here, observe the various seabirds or visit the award-winning environmental show. We will fly east to Dublin from here, arriving at about 7:00pm.
