The Great Australian Bight

The Great Australian Bight is not only impressive because of its size, with towering cliffs that wind into the distance, but also because it is an area where the majority of the lifeforms found there can be found nowhere else on Earth. It is also the living link that the Mirning people have to the old environment and the ocean that lies beyond it.

The Ngargangurie cliffs, also known as the Bunda cliffs, and the Nullarbor are examples of geographical features that can be found at the edge of the continent. This breathtaking dividing line between the ocean, the sky, and the land is hundreds of kilometres long and forms the longest line of sea cliffs in the world, with some of them reaching heights of up to 120 metres.

7 days Relaxating Australian Camp TrekIt’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to visit this time-honored location, with a colour pallet that spans from ochre to grayish-green bushes, bright blue sky to deeper blue water.

The kelp forests of the Great Southern Reef are home to an extraordinary variety of marine life, which can be found living beneath the ocean’s surface. From this vantage point, the Southern Ocean extends off into the horizon until it touches Antarctica, a pristine marine ecosystem that is quite unlike anything else found anywhere on the globe.

The Nullarbor is home to the world’s longest continuous expanse of limestone. A hidden world has been preserved in time just beneath the surface of the desert. It is filled with the skeleton remains of animals such as marsupial lions, thylacines, and demons that previously lived in this area.

The Mirning have been using these caverns as a source of knowledge for more than 65,000 years. The caves provide a glimpse into the distant past of our planet.

The Mirning maintain a vital connection to the land as well as the sky and the water. Everything in this country, from the ancient seabed of the Nullarbor to the limestone coast and the water, falls under the jurisdiction of Jeedera, the ancestral dreamtime white whale that was responsible for the creation of this country.

When you go exploring in the Great Australian Bight, you’ll find that you’re surrounded by a wealth of history, from golden kelp reefs and sinkholes to the songs of whales. Establish a connection with this location and gain insight into the living future it holds.

Where can I find it?

Cape Catastrophe, which is located on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, and Cape Pasley, which is located in the east of Esperance in Western Australia are both parts of the Great Australian Bight. The continental shelf in the Bight is quite expansive, reaching well over 200 nautical miles in some sections.
