Doge’s Palace, Venice

Locally called Palazzo Ducale (Ducal Palace, Palace of the Duke), Doge’s Palace is a massive palace complex next to St. Mark’s Square and on a Venice canal, with ornate rooms, art and secret passageways.

A Gothic masterpiece, it is a remarkable complex made up of layers of structural materials and ornamentation, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries through the substantial Renaissance and luxurious Mannerist additions. Three big blocks make up the structure, which incorporates prior structures.
