Locally called Palazzo Ducale (Ducal Palace, Palace of the Duke), Doge’s Palace is a massive palace complex next to St. Mark’s Square and on a Venice canal, with ornate rooms, art and secret passageways.
A Gothic masterpiece, it is a remarkable complex made up of layers of structural materials and ornamentation, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries through the substantial Renaissance and luxurious Mannerist additions. Three big blocks make up the structure, which incorporates prior structures.
The wing facing St. Mark’s Basin is the oldest, dating back to 1340. From 1424 onwards, the wing facing St. Mark’s Square was constructed in its current configuration.
The canal-side wing, which houses the Doge’s residences and several government offices, was built between 1483 and 1565 during the Renaissance.
It was a seat of Venetian Dukes, who were ruling this city/state for centuries.
Featuring a museum and offering guided tours. One of the top three attractions in Venice, so don’t miss out. We recommended guided tour as this way you will learn detailed history of the palace.
