You can find Union Square San Francisco three blocks north of the massive and well-known Market Street in the city’s central business district. In common usage, the name refers to the entire neighbourhood, not simply the central plaza, with all its hotels, restaurants, and theatres.

The block-long square has been transformed into a park with the addition of many stone and concrete walkways and features, such as cafes and lounging spots.

The park has been around since the middle of the nineteenth century, and its name originates from gatherings that took place there during the American Civil War.

Art and Architecture Walking Tour of Union Square and ChinatownYou can witness the changes that have taken place in Union Square over the last two decades by looking at old photographs from the 1980s and 1990s, which your friends who lived in San Francisco will gladly share with you. The area was dangerous, and drug addicts and the homeless were the norm rather than the exception.

This began to alter about the year 2000, and the transformation was so profound that the area surrounding the Dewey Memorial is now frequently visited by tourists.

Near Union Square lies a massive Macy’s, a department store that most people associate exclusively with New York City. You can also locate Bloomingdale’s not far away (in the Westfield Shopping Centre on Market Street), as well as Nordstrom, two more brands in the style of Karstadt and Kaufhof – albeit with a stronger concentration on clothes. Asos, Zara, Mango, Forever 21, and many more are all represented.

It’s possible to spend a whole day shopping here if you’re interested enough and have enough money.

If you wish to take a break in between , we propose either a café right on Union Square, the food court of the Westfield Centre with a vast range or a visit to one of the numerous and usually nice restaurants.

Tourists flock to this area of the city because of Union Square and the cable car turnaround. It faces the aforementioned Westfield Mall on its front side. The lines here are really long, therefore arriving early is highly recommended. The nearby Cable Car Museum is a calmer alternative.

Downtown sightseeing typically includes a visit to either the north or the east of the city. In the north you will find – a little uphill – Chinatown with its renowned Dragon Gate, while in the east the Embarcadero with its Ferry Building greets tourists. Both are must-see attractions.
