This museum is part of the group of Scottish museums, where you also have National War Museum, in Edinburgh, the National Museum of Flight, in East Lothian and the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride. They are all worth visiting.

The galleries in the newer building depict Scottish history in a largely chronological order, beginning with prehistory and ending with the early medieval period on the lower levels, with subsequent periods on the top levels. Natural history, international cultures (with galleries on the South Pacific, East Asia, and Ancient Egypt), European art and design, and science and technology are all represented in the Victorian building, which reopened in 2011.

The Grand Gallery houses a range of big pieces from the collections, including the “Window on the World,” an exhibit that rises four floors, or about 20 meters, and contains over 800 objects that show the collection’s breadth.

The “Discoveries” section, located below the Grand Gallery, contains artefacts related to “exceptional Scots… in the realms of invention, discovery, and adventure.”
