During the fifth century a small fortification was built by the Visigoths. It was changed and expanded by the Moors in the mid-eleventh century, and was turned into a Royal Palace during the reign of Afonso I of Portugal (1109–1185). It was finally restored entirely in 1938.

During the thirteenth century the Castle reached its maximum splendor and lasted until the seventeenth century when it was occupied by the Kings of Portugal as well as the Bishop.

Today it is one of the top tourist attractions in Lisbon and Portugal.
